Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Office Chief of Strategic Safety and Implementation, a Supervising Transportation Engineer (Manager), the incumbent, a Senior Transportation Engineer, serves as a functional manager of the Traffic Safety Investigations Branch. The Branch identifies collision locations for investigation and provides statewide guidance and support for conducting investigations on the State Highway System (SHS). The incumbent oversees and leads the maintenance and improvements to the Traffic Investigation Report Tracking System (TIRTS) and the traffic safety data system.

The incumbent is responsible for supporting the Division of Safety Programs and districts to utilize safety systems and devices to implement a Safe System Approach on the State Highway System, as well as providing uniform standards for regional partners and local roads to help California meet its Strategic Highway Safety Program (SHSP) and Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) goals. The Safe System Approach aims to eliminate fatal and serious injuries for all road users. It does so through a holistic view of the road system that first anticipates human mistakes and second keeps impact energy on the human body at tolerable levels.

Working Conditions

Position located at 1120 N Street, Sacramento, CA, Sacramento County 

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

  • This position require(s) a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment. 

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
