Job Summary:
The University of Alabama is seeking a Data Scientist III to join the Business Analytics Institute. This role involves overseeing data management and integration efforts, supporting advanced data analysis, and mentoring students while collaborating on significant research initiatives.
Responsibilities:
• Oversees data management and integration efforts across the university, state, and federal agencies
• Develops processes to extract, transform, and load data into common data repositories
• Coordinates creating new databases, performing database backups and restores, user maintenance, and ensuring database performance
• Provides guidance, training, and/or oversight of other Data Scientists
• Lead and support advanced data analysis efforts across multiple IDA projects
• Emphasis on statistical modeling, machine learning, and effective communication of results
• Collaborate on high-impact research initiatives such as the Drug Data Research Center (DDRC) and projects involving Alabama Medicaid
• Involves interdisciplinary efforts in grant writing, manuscript development, and cross-campus collaborations
• Mentoring students in analytical methods and software applications
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of data science or analytics experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of data science or analytics experience.
• Proficiency in statistical methods such as regression, longitudinal data analysis, and machine learning.
• Experience working with large data sets and data management tools.
• Proficiency in Python required, with additional experience in statistical programming languages such as SAS or R preferred.
• Familiarity with data visualization and dashboarding tools is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic research through peer-reviewed publications.
• Experience mentoring students or junior analysts in research settings.
• Experience contributing to grant proposals and research manuscripts is strongly preferred.
Preferred:
• Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Operations Management, Mathematics, or a closely related field, and at least three (3) years of experience in statistical data analysis and modeling.
• Doctoral degree in one of the above fields (preferred).
• Strong background in applied research in healthcare, public policy, or social sciences.
• Ability to communicate technical findings to a variety of audiences, including stakeholders without technical backgrounds.
• Experience in managing complex, multi-stakeholder research projects.
