Work LocationUNHQ, New York Expected durationThe internship position is for a minimum of two months with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum six months, pending the needs of the department. The internship is expected to start in October 2025, though applicants interested to take up a Winter or Spring internship are also encouraged to apply. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe position is located in the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The internship position is for a minimum of two months with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum six months, pending the needs of the department. Start date is October 2025, though applicants interested to take up a Winter or Spring internship are also encouraged to apply. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement to be conducted fully remote, hybrid (in-person and remote), part-time, and/or temporary FWA for the purpose of G-4 visa processing. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities The intern will assist the office in supporting the work of the new Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation pursuant to General Assembly Resolution 79/235. Further information on the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee can be found at Duties may include but are not limited to: - Assistance in drafting, reviewing and preparing papers, presentations, studies, reports and any other relevant documents; - Attending, providing assistance, and summarizing conferences and meetings, including virtual meetings; - Research, compilation and analysis of information in tax matters, including in the areas of multilateral treaties, tax treaties, taxation of income derived from the provision of cross-border services in an increasingly digitalized and globalized economy, prevention and resolution of tax disputes, exchange of information, and tax-related environmental, social and governance issues, especially (in the case of all these topics) as they affect countries' sustainable development; - Preparing and providing input for briefing notes, talking points, speeches and similar materials on tax matters and development cooperation issues for senior UN officials; - Following relevant intergovernmental meetings (including virtual meetings) of the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council, and preparing draft summaries; - Assisting with any other ad hoc assignments related to the work of the office. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following condition must be met: • Applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); (c) Subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances. • Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
