About Reception Diagnostic Center :
As a part of the Indiana Department of Correction, the Reception Diagnostic Center (RDC) promotes public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry. We strive to model best Correctional practices, return productive citizens to our communities, and inspire a culture of accountability, integrity, and professionalism. The Reception Diagnostic Center is a maximum security intake facility for adult males. The Reception Diagnostic Center is located in Plainfield, Indiana. At the Reception Diagnostic Center, all adult male incarcerated individuals are received, classified, and transferred to long-term facilities. During intake, incarcerated individuals are seen by multiple divisions throughout the Department of Correction for assessments, including for their physical and emotional health, addiction recovery services, educational and work opportunities, and other needs, which help determine which of the state’s facilities best meet their needs.

 

Role Overview

The Internal Affairs Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the facility through thorough investigations, inspections, and compliance oversight. The position conducts investigations into incidents, accidents, and correspondence involving staff, incarcerated individuals, or others associated with the facility, ensuring all actions comply with Indiana Code and Department of Correction policies. Duties include gathering and preserving evidence, preparing detailed reports, and potentially collaborating with outside agencies for criminal investigations. The role also supports security operations by inspecting the facility to confirm procedures are followed, recommending improvements to strengthen safety measures, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and ACA standards. Working closely with management and supervisory personnel, this position plays a key part in developing, implementing, and monitoring effective security procedures to protect both staff and incarcerated individuals. 


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Investigate incidents/accidents involving staff, offenders, or others associated with the facility. 
  • Gather evidence, recover, and accurately label items considered evidence for future use in internal/external cases. 
  • Complete and provide reports, information, and criminal intelligence to outside agencies when appropriate. 
  • Conduct criminal investigations involving outside agencies when appropriate. 
  • Conduct inspections of facility to determine whether security concerns exist and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and ACA standards. 
  • Participate in trials, provide testimony as expert witness, and testify in court hearings. 
  • Observe offender activities and line movements to report issues.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in corrections, investigative work, law enforcement, or military police. At least one (1) year of experience must be in investigative work. 
    • Completion of a government sanctioned investigative training program may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. (Proof of completion must accompany application) 
  • Must complete the 40-hour IDOC Investigations Academy within one (1) year of being in the position. 
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.
  • Specialized knowledge of the principles, techniques, and terminology of current investigative practices and security procedures 
  • Working knowledge of Federal laws, Indiana codes, and Department of Correction policies and procedures. 
  • Working knowledge of due process, criminal, and civil liability.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
