Police Officer Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must have attained their 21st birthday at the last date for filing application. Applicants must be under 35 years of age at the time of application and at such time as the Initial Eligibility Register is posted unless exempt from age restrictions as provided for in State Statue 65 IL 5/10-2.1.6 which provides in part that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a Certified (Full-Time) Law Enforcement Officer for a municipality in the United States.
  • Must be able to participate and successfully complete all of the testing process to include background investigation, credit history, polygraph exam, medical exam, drug screen, and psychological exam.
  • Must have visual acuity 20/20 each eye corrected with normal color vision and depth perception.
  • May not have any felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude, as specified in 5/10-2.10-6 of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
  • Must be of good moral character, of temperate habits, of sound health and must be physically able to perform the duties of the position of police officer.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or have permanent resident status and is legally authorized to work permanently in the United States. Under federal law, must be authorized to obtain, carry, purchase or otherwise possess a firearm.
  • POWER cards are not required to apply and take the written exam, however, must have a POWER card dated no earlier than December 30, 2024. Must provide copy of POWER card by the time of the Oral Interview.

Mandatory Orientation/Written Examination Information – Saturday, January 31, 2026

A brief orientation followed by a written examination will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Island Lake Village Hall, 3720 Greenleaf Ave., Island Lake, IL. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the orientation will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Mandatory Oral Interviews – Week of February 9th-13th, 2026.

Oral interviews will be the next step in testing after the exam. Additional details will be supplied at a later date.
