Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Construction Accountant to join our accounting team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in accounting, particularly in the construction industry, and will be responsible for overseeing the financial management of construction projects. This role involves working closely with project managers, contractors, and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with all accounting standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:
    • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports for construction projects, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and project cost analysis.
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of project revenues, costs, and forecasts.
    • Analyze financial discrepancies, recommend solutions, and assist with resolution.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Prepare and manage project budgets, ensuring alignment with project schedules and objectives.
    • Provide regular updates on project financial status, including cost overruns, and suggest corrective actions.
    • Work closely with project managers to update forecasts, including changes in project scope or timeline.
  • Cost Tracking & Management:
    • Monitor and track project costs, including labor, materials, and subcontractors.
    • Verify invoices and ensure appropriate documentation is provided before processing payments.
    • Review and reconcile subcontractor and supplier statements, and ensure compliance with contract terms.
  • Job Costing:
    • Oversee the accurate allocation of job costs to construction projects, ensuring proper coding of expenses.
    • Provide detailed reports on job cost variances and work with project teams to address discrepancies.
  • Compliance & Internal Controls:
    • Ensure compliance with all accounting regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
    • Track and reconcile any contractual amendments, change orders, or contingencies, ensuring that they are accurately reflected in project budgets and forecasts.
    • Assist with external audits and support the preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
    • Maintain internal controls for the timely processing of accounts payable and receivable.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices for project accounting procedures.
    • Collaborate with other departments to streamline workflows and improve overall financial operations.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Assist in the preparation of Holding Company consolidations.
    • Assist with entity dissolutions.
    • Other ad hoc projects as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • CPA and/or Big 4 experience preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-6 years of accounting experience in the construction industry, with a strong understanding of construction-specific accounting principles.
    • Proven experience managing complex financial transactions, job costing, and contract administration.
  • Skills:
    • Advanced proficiency with Yardi accounting software
    • Strong understanding of construction contracts, change orders, and project management principles.
    • Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong communication skills to interact with various stakeholders, including project managers and senior leadership.
