Salary: $65,925.60 – $87,900.80

About Us:
We are a passionate and growing local union, the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local 6, dedicated to advocating for the rights of musicians and improving working conditions for our members. As a union that thrives on solidarity and collective action, we are looking for a dedicated Union Organizer to support our mission and help expand our reach in the Bay Area. We currently have ~2000 members and our goal is to add 100 members/year.

Position Overview:
The Union Organizer will be instrumental in driving campaigns to organize and engage musicians in the Bay Area. This position focuses on cultivating relationships with musicians, leading membership growth efforts, supporting active campaigns, and maintaining a strong presence within the local labor community. Working closely with the President and union leadership, the Union Organizer will plan and execute strategic organizing initiatives to build power for musicians in the region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultivating Relationships: Build and maintain relationships with Bay Area musicians through one-on-one meetings, community outreach, and active engagement.
  • Campaign Planning & Execution: Collaborate with the President to plan and execute strategic organizing campaigns to recruit and empower musicians.
  • Database Management: Maintain an up-to-date and accurate contact database of community leaders, organizations, and musicians.
  • Membership Onboarding: Facilitate monthly Membership Meetings to onboard new union members and provide ongoing support.
  • Campaign Management: Oversee and manage active organizing campaigns, ensuring progress and impact.
  • Training Members: Develop and deliver training sessions to empower and educate union members about their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of union solidarity.
  • Labor Community Presence: Maintain a strong presence within the local labor community and participate in events that build solidarity and raise awareness.
  • Delegate Coordination & Support: Train and support union delegates to enhance their leadership and organizing efforts.
  • Outreach Event Coordination: Staff outreach events, working closely with partners to ensure successful execution and maximum engagement.
  • Representing AFM Local 6: Represent the union in the Bay Area through presentations, meetings, and community engagement efforts.
  • Digital Organizing Tools: Utilize various digital tools for relational and targeted organizing, enhancing campaign reach and engagement.
  • Volunteer Recruitment & Training: Recruit, empower, and train volunteers in the musician community to support organizing efforts and strengthen the union.
  • Local Expertise: Maintain a strong knowledge of the Bay Area’s music scene and labor environment to effectively target and organize musicians.
  • Special Projects & Other Duties: Perform other duties and assist with special projects as needed by the union leadership.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years' experience in community-based organizing, preferably in a union or advocacy context. Understanding of gig-economy and/or professional music industry a plus but not required.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain genuine relationships.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong ability to connect with a wide range of people, especially musicians, and build strong working relationships.
  • Team Player: Positive, proactive, and personable individual who thrives in both independent and collaborative work environments.
  • Flexible Schedule: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, including evenings, weekends, and occasional travel.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and database management tools. Graphic design skills a plus.
  • Social Media: Proficient with social media and digital communication.
  • Commitment to AFM’s Mission: A strong commitment to the AFM’s mission and the principles of labor organizers such as Jane McAlevey.
  • Cultural Competency: Ability to work with a diverse community and maintain inclusivity in all aspects of organizing and outreach.
