Colton Herta has officially joined Cadillac F1 as a development driver.
The 25-year-old American has won nine IndyCar races since 2019.
He sees the move as a key step toward his Formula 1 ambitions.
“This is a dream opportunity I’ve worked toward for years,” Herta said.
“My dream has always been to race in F1, and this move is a huge step.”
Cadillac confirmed his 2026 racing programme will be revealed later.
Herta previously came close to an F1 seat with Red Bull in 2023.
But he lacked the points needed for the FIA’s strict super-licence.
Cadillac may explore Formula 2 or IndyCar results to help him qualify.
The team recently signed Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez as drivers.
CEO Dan Towriss stressed the importance of a pathway for Americans.
For now, Herta will support development while building toward his goal.
“Having an American driver with an American F1 team is significant,” said principal Graeme Lowdon.
He praised Herta’s race craft, maturity, and IndyCar experience.
The move marks a milestone for both Cadillac F1 and U.S. motorsport.
